Nov 2013 - Eleebana Primary School Visit to WBCG

A recent excursion by 300 students from Eleebana Primary School was a fantastic opportunity for local children to learn more about the plans for the community garden in Bunya Park. An overview of the garden plan was provided which prompted many curious questions, though the thought of being able to partake in wood-fired pizza generated the most enthusiasm.
The children were then provided "virtual veggies" to plant in the ground. Pictures of a variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs were available for the children to plant and they were challenged to work out which garden bed their respective plants belong. The chili pepper proved to be the most challenging... (technically, its a fruit).
Many of the children spoke to the garden volunteers about their own veggie gardens at home. It was very encouraging to hear how their own veggie plots produced a variety of food for their families. It is hoped that we can accommodate more schools visits like this in the future and perhaps plant some real seedlings in garden beds. The committee would like to thank all the volunteers and teachers that helped with the excursion and hope to see you again very soon.

Trivia Night Success

Our recent Trivia Night was a huge success which raised over $700 to go towards the construction of the Community Garden. Well done to the "Share Our Park" team who took out the first place in the contest. Everyone had a fantastic time and the whole event was a credit to the coordinators.

Trivia Night

It's getting closer. The turning of the first sod can't be too far off so what better time to get together for a very special meet and greet to not only raise funds but also have a lot of fun too. We're planning a TRIVIA NIGHT on FRIDAY, AUGUST 16th, 2013 at the excellent PIPPIS at the POINT, Cnr The Esplanade and Main Road, Speers Point from 6.30 - 9PM.

ENTRY is Adults $10, Concession $5, Families $25 and there will be a Kids Corner with face painting, drawing and more. It'll be a great night of fun and games, opportunities to donate to a good cause plus a chance for more of us to meet each other and you don't even have to be a gardener to join in!

To BOOK contact Trish or John via our Contact Us page. Book now and pop it in your diary - don't miss out!  We'd love you to join in the fun with us. That's Friday, August 16 from 6.30pm at Pippis for the WBCG Trivia Night - see you there.

Survey Markers Installed

As the committee is continuing to work through the 39 consent conditions of our DA, it was observed recently that council has commenced marking out the boundaries of the future Community Garden with survey pegs. There was much excitement when people heard the news at our recent seedling stall.

The survey markers indicate the boundary of the entire community garden site, as well as the area designated for stage one of the project, which consists of the following:

> formation of the swale
> construction of a series of raised vegetable garden beds
> construction / creation of the garden entry
> planting of citrus / fruit trees
> installation of information signs
> installation of a bike rack
> establishment of bush food area
> construction of compost bays
> informal establishment of pathways

If you have any questions about phase one, please visit our FAQ's page and feel free to contact us.

Water Quality Testing Team Established

WBCG is committed to protecting our local waterways and as such, a small team to monitor the water quality directly downstream of the future community garden in Bunya Park has been established. Members have been trained in how to measure water quality through the Catchment Management Authority's Waterwise program. Testing will be on a monthly roster basis. Additional team members are always welcome so if you would like to be involved, please contact us for more information via our Contact Us page.

Donation from Bunnings Glendale

Glendale Bunnings kindly donated a new shredder/mulcher to WBCG to help process our compost. Activities Organiser Marion Roche presented WBCG volunteers Fred Goring and John Jarvie with the shredder/mulcher today. Fred donated well aged compost for our seedlings and garden beds while John and our volunteers bagged up the compost. The compost is already being used in our seed - raising mix to produce healthy organic herbs and vegetables.

With 37 chaff bags of compost bagged - and more in the making - our new shredder/mulcher will be kept busy as we prepare the compost for our greenhouse seedlings.

Thank you Glendale Bunnings - your donation is much appreciated.
